So I decided to share what I did for Brandon’s birthday this past weekend. I always get tons of questions on how I come up with the things I do, especially on special occasions. So I figured I’d just take you through the process step by step. As I mentioned in a previous post, I absolutely love giving gifts. However, I’m not too fond of simply handing someone their gift in a paper bag. I love to personalize gifts and add a lil extra something, it makes it that much more special and fun, don’t you think?
I already knew months in advance the main gift that I wanted to get. So closer to the time, I just had to decide how to present it. I wanted to throw in a few tiny gifts leading up to the big one, so I came up with an easy and inexpensive way to do it. I made some oversized dice, and each time it landed on a number, it would be linked to a gift and a personalized note with a hint of what it was. If you’d like to know how to do this yourself and what else the weekend consisted if, keep on reading!
DIY: Oversized Dice
What you’ll need:
1) Foam Cube – The size is completely up to you. I got a 5*5*5 one.
2) Black and White acrylic paint
3) Foam Brushes (regular and circular)
4) Alphabet Stickers (Optional)
5) Mini Cards & Envelopes
*Side Note: All items were purchased at Walmart
Step 1: Paint the Cube
It would be much better to go with a cube that has a smooth finish which is much easier to work with. Unfortunately, I checked at least 3 different stores and only found the regular one. But if you can find the smooth ones, then go for it! I used about 2-3 coats on each side to achieve the final look.
Step 2: Start Dotting Away!
Simply dip the circular foam brushes in some black paint and make your dots. I used a real dice to ensure that my dots were positioned correctly. Since I had four actual gifts, I dotted the 1, 2, 4 and 6 and left two sides to spell out Happy Birthday and I love you with the alphabet stickers. Of course, this is optional as you could want to dot all sides for a total of 6 gifts.
Just to add a bit more creativity, I wrote up some cute little cards with hints to what the gift was that also related to our relationship. For example, I got tickets for us to see one of his favorite comedians. In the card I wrote: “All that I’m after is a life full of laughter, as long as it’s with you.”
Step 4: Final Touches
Ensure that you package all the gifts, whether you’re wrapping them, or putting them in gift bags or boxes. Also, tape each note to the specific gift. I used the smallest size foam brush to make matching dots on the cards to the ones on the actual dice. Then Ta-Dah! You’re all done! 🙂
What he got:
Gift One: His favorite sweet treats
Gift Two: Visa Gift Card
Gift Six: Tickets for the DeRay Davis Comedy Show
Gift Four: Macbook Air
All this was done on his actual birthday on Sunday. On Saturday night, I threw him a dinner party with all of his closest friends. All I can say if you want to do this is to ensure that the time you make the reservation at the restaurant for is at least an hour after the time you tell all the guests to arrive. I say this because speaking from experience, people will be late! Lol.
Overall, the weekend was quite eventful, and we had a blast! Below are a few pictures from the comedy show and dinner. Feel free to share your thoughts as well as pictures if you try to do this or something similar as well.
Until Next Time..
